Normally indicated for patients aged 17 years or over and at least 6 months after extraction. Satisfactory bone support and periapical condition of the supporting abutment teeth is necessary, alongside a good standard of oral hygiene and occlusion.
A bridge is a fixed replacement for a missing tooth or teeth. It's made by taking an impression of the surrounding teeth, which will eventually support the bridge. A bridge is usually created from metal and porcelain and will be fixed in your mouth (unlike dentures, which can be removed).
A crownis a type of cap that completely covers a real tooth. It's made from either metal, or porcelain and metal, and is fixed in your mouth. Crowns can be fitted where a tooth has broken, decayed or been damaged, or just to make a tooth look better.
To fit a crown, the old tooth will need to be drilled down so it's like a small peg onto which the crown will be fixed. It can take some time for the lab to prepare a new crown, so you probably won't have the crown fitted on the same day.
Different types of crowns
Different types of materials can be used to make a crown. Each material has relative strengths and merits. At Smile 32 Dental, we offer below types of crowns.
Porcelain fused to metal: This has a precious metal inside and porcelain layers over it. This type of crown is strong and durable as well as being tooth-coloured.
Advantage - The metal substructure provides adequate strength
Disadvantage - lacks the aesthetic looks due to metal.
All-ceramic crowns: This is a modern and metal-free technique which is strong and aesthetically superior. It is suitable for all areas of the mouth.
We make two varieties of all-ceramic crowns; E-max and Zirconia.
The E-Max crown is a type of all-ceramic crown which is preferred for its longer lasting, aesthetic qualities. This has superior aesthetic qualities. This is indicated for damaged and dark tooth with poor quality.
Advantage - The E-max crown has a lifelike shape and transparent colour that provides an exact colour match with the patient's own natural teeth. The crown is long lasting, strong, and less prone to fractures when compared to other traditional crown types
Disadvantage - The only disadvantage of E-max crown is its high cost
Zirconia crown is a top range crown which are most durable and has translucence which makes them indistinguishable from the natural tooth.
Advantage - It has adequate strength and durability. In fact, its crown cannot be spotted amongst natural teeth. Zirconia crown is long lasting, easy to wear and durable when compared to other crowns. The translucent appearance of Zirconia crowns blends well with the natural teeth colour and thus provides the most pleasing appearance. It requires minimal tooth preparation thus preserves most of the original tooth substance which is also favourable while removing the crown.
Disadvantage - The zirconia crown is tough, durable and possesses abrasive quality thus imposing the friction against the tooth root including neighbouring teeth. Hence, an E-max crown could be a favourable option for cases that require preservation of the root structure.
Gold alloy crown: These crowns are the most durable and wear resistant. But they are not tooth coloured.
Advantage - They are long lasting, kind to neighbouring teeth and easy to work.
Disadvantage - They are not aesthetic due to the colour.
